Citizens on Patrol

Beausejour Citizens on Patrol (COPP) 1st Annual General Meeting held on March 27th, 2026

Pictured above, the Beausejour COPP team. New executive elected: Treasurer: Jan LeClerc; Secretary/Recorder: Sandy Powers; Assistant Coordinator: Brad Lowry (not in photo); Program Coordinator: Mary Johnson. At the, open to the public, Citizens on Patrol Annual General Meeting, the COPP patrollers were joined by legion members and interested public. Very well received were the presentations Crime Prevention by Environmental Design actioned by RCMP, Corporal Peter Baxted, and Conflict De-escalation actioned by patroller and community nurse, RN Kathy Majowski. The presentations left participants planning how to monitor their own environment (i.e. adding backyard solar lighting, open lower fencing, tidy yard) and their own behaviours (i.e. listening, observing and staying calm).

The annual report included a projected deficit for the 2026 program. With an opening bank balance of $3,753.04 and projected expenses of $3,550.00, based on a minimum of 1 patrol per team per month, and the only income a grant from Town of Beausejour, COPP Beausejour's projected deficit is $2,050.00. The only major expense in the budget is that each person who uses their own vehicle to patrol receives $10.00 per 25+km patrol to offset gasoline expenses. The Town of Beausejour continues to provide use of a van to those who choose not to use their own vehicle or do not have a vehicle. With the increase in number of future patrols required, other sources of funding will need to be explored as some volunteer teams are now patrolling 2 or more times per month.

COPP thanks the Beausejour Legion #132 for its welcoming hospitality and for providing the space, at no charge, for our meeting. It is a great community service. COPP also thanks the community and RCMP for their support of the COPP program. Special thanks to all the volunteers, including outgoing coordinators, Paul Meades and Mel Darroch. There would be no program without volunteer patrollers giving their time for daytime, evening, midnight and early morning patrols.
